Frequently Asked Questions
Okay, granted, nobody's asked these questions yet, but hopefully they'll clear up any lingering confusion.
So What's The Point Of The Site Again?
It's to take the pre-existing, veteran characters of the DC Universe, characters who in most sites you join as a 'continuation' of their heroic careers, and instead offer you the opportunity to start at square one with them. Every meeting is with a new face, every save their first, and as the Earth stands right now, there are few in the way of genuine 'superheroes' operating.
So, On This Site, Batman Hasn't Been Running Around For A Decade?
Nope, he's likely still strictly in his Year One phase.
What About Martian Manhunter? He Was Saving People Long Before He Showed His Face.
Basically, your joining signifies your character's 'public' debut. If you wanted to have Bruce Wayne creeping around as an urban legend for six months, or the Flash super-speeding muggers to submission without being seen, go ahead. At the beginning of Superman's involvement in the site, he's been saving people in Metropolis for a bit over a month, in costume, but has yet to stay still long enough for the press to get ahold of him; he hasn't even 'officially' moved back to the United States as Clark Kent. Likewise, the Martian Manhunter can indeed have spent many years protecting civilians; he just wasn't green while doing it, or lifting trucks in plain sight.
If I Join As Green Lantern, Do I Have To Have Him Start Flying Around In Costume Right Away?
No, you can wait for awhile, roleplay them getting their powers or choosing their moment to leap onto the scene. Just because you become Hal Jordan doesn't mean you automatically need to wave your ring at everybody.
So Is This Taking Place In The 1980s Or Something?
No, aside from the 'advanced tech' that will no doubt spring up due to the setting, just consider this as taking place in the year 2014.
Butbutbut I Want To Play Damian Wayne! Can I?!
It'll often depend on the circumstances. Some characters, like Superboy, won't be available from the get-go, but might be permitted as time goes on (enough time for someone to clone Superman, in other words). Others, like Steel or Supergirl, will be available very early on, (as long as their 'inspiring hero' or villain has made their debut,) since the direct methodology of their creation doesn't hinge so crucially on a specific time, but rather an event, and we're fine with fiddling the timeline around to fit these varied characters in. Of course, again, they'll still need to wait for a Superman to have showed up in order to inspire them. (How fortunate there already is one! =D )
Considering the specific origin of Damian Wayne, however, it is highly unlikely he will be permitted anytime soon, barring time travel or accelerated aging. Again, feel free to present an idea to the admins before applying; the idea will need to be approved both by us, and by the player playing the character most affected (in this case, Batman.)
On A Comic-Literate Level, What Do I Need To Know?
While you obviously need to know the character, their origins, abilities, personality and such, (in other words, enough to play them convincingly,) the fact that this is torpedoing a lot of the pre-existing lore means that you don't need much more than the basic know-how of the character. If you know a character's personality- saw them on Justice League or what have you- but don't know all the nitty gritty details, the DC Database is an excellent source of information. Just don't copy and paste please, we want your application written in your own words. And naturally, we do expect the character to be played well; this isn't permission to reimagine Shazam as some swinging ladies man. (Seriously, he's like ten or something, that's just CREEPY. T_T )
Wait, Wait, Hub City Isn't Here! Does That Mean I Can't Be The Question?!
If you're joining as a hero operating from an unlisted city, and are bound and determined to play in that city, we will accomadate you. Just keep in mind that if we had every city that every hero operated out of under normal circumstances, we'd have an average total of two members per location, no matter how many members we got. For this reason, feel free to have the Question operating out of one of the locations already on the board instead, such as Gotham, and simply alter or add to his origins appropriately. If you insist on operating out of Hub City, just remember nobody is obligated to visit you there.
Is The Justice League Around? What About The Teen Titans?
No, and no, but that's what we're hoping will be the appeal; brand new heroic leagues, and classic groups, can now be built from the ground-up. Eventually a band of heroes might get together and discover a H.I.V.E base on the moon, later making it the Watchtower... >.> Rosters will be more flexible to account for the reality that we might not have all the canon Titans or Leaguers joined at the time. In other words, if your hero is a teen and staying in Jump City, chances are they can be a Titan, comic history aside. The eventual Justice League might be a bit stricter in terms of roster at first, especially when it comes to Original Characters, but in time it will be expanded. Think 'Justice League' first, before eventually going 'Justice League Unlimited.'
